The 5 Day Whale and Overberg Walking Tour is an exciting journey that allows nature lovers to immerse themselves in the spectacular grandeur of South Africa’s Western Cape.
On this walk, you will have a full experience of the Overberg tapestry – the patchwork of canola and wheat fields in brilliant yellow and green, rocky shores, wildflowers and fynbos.
Overberg is Dutch for over the mountain, from where this area starts and up to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point in Africa. This is a place of diverse and spectacular beauty. Your walk will take you on backroads less travelled on a journey along ever-changing seascapes and picturesque landscapes. The rich collection of mission stations and shipwrecks will remind you of memories from the past Today historic architectural treasures exist harmoniously with new developments in the Overberg towns.

Day 1: Departure
Traveling Day
On this walk, you will enjoy a full Overberg experience! We will pick you up at 14h00 from Cape Town International airport and travel to Hermanus via the scenic Clarence Drive that hugs the Whale Coast. We will pass Bettie Bay and stop at some lookout points until we reach Kleinmond from where we will travel to Hermanus. You will have lots of photographic opportunities of the Overberg landscapes and mountain scenery all around you.

Day 2
Walking day 1
We start our walk along cliff paths from Vermont to Onrus from where you will be transferred to the New Harbour. From here we will follow the coast-hugging Cliff Path to the Old Harbour in the center of town. Hermanus is world-renowned for the best land-based whale watching in the world and in season southern right whale sightings are possible. You will have ample free time to explore the town speckled with hidden shopping treasures. After lunch (own account) we will continue our Cliff Path walk to Voëlklip. The fynbos cladded cliff path offers infinite views over Walker Bay. From Voëlklip you will be transferred back to your accommodation – 20km

Day 3
Walking day 2
We walk from Kleinbaai harbour all along the coast. Optional: Boat trip to Dyer Island. A transfer takes you to Gansbaai Harbour. From here we walk along the coast-hugging Duiwelsgat Cliff Path, with seasonal whale watching opportunities, to De Kelders, which derived its name from the unique drupkelder. Cave. Another attraction is the majestic copper and white sharks. Gansbaai is known as the Great White Shark capital of the world. 21km

Day 4
Walking day 3
Walk from De Damme along the beautiful coastline on 4×4 tracks, pass Quine point lighthouse, one of five lighthouses in the Overberg, onto a stretch of white sandy beach. The ‘Seekos’ Lunch with a local fisherman family at Buffeljags (own account) is a definite tour highlight. We continue our walk through Buffeljags village to visit the “Ghost” town of Platjieskraal. 20km

Day5
Walking Day 4
After an iconic Marietjie’s Pub breakfast in Baardskeerders Bos you will be transferred to L’Agulhas. We will walk from Pebble Beach to the historical lighthouse of L’Agulhas, passing the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Atlantic & Indian oceans meet. The Meisho Maru shipwreck on our route is but one of the skeletons in this ship graveyard on the Cape of Storms. Back at the lighthouse, you will have the opportunity to climb up with the narrow, wooden staircase. From the top of this 150-year-old lighthouse, built in the classic Egyptian Pharos style, you will have a beautiful view of the unique Khoi fish traps. We leave L’Agulhas and drive to Bredasdorp to visit the shipwreck museum. We continue our walk along farm roads, surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery and a typical Overberg tapestry of canola and wheat fields in brilliant yellow and green, to Oewerzicht Farm. 20km

Day 6
Walking day 5
We will walk from Oewerzicht to Greyton on back roads through beautiful farm landscapes. You will have plenty of time to explore the quaint village of Greyton. Walk on a jeep track, through a Fynbos veldt, to visit Genadendal, six kilometers outside Greyton, the first and oldest mission station in South Africa. A visit to the museum and the historic church, once visited by Lady Ann Barnard and Nelson Mandela, will finish the last section of the day. We drive back to Oewerzicht. 20km

Day 7
Return
We will leave early for Cape Town International Airport to arrive at 10:00.
